Hey {{first_name | Mixtape Reader}},
It's Friday. You made it. Let's close the week with something useful.
This is The Mixtape Mix, our Friday edition covering the moves that don't fit neatly into a single category but matter just as much.
🎵 Track 3: The Roth Conversion Window
Here's a situation a lot of Gen Xers are in right now:
You've got a solid traditional 401k or IRA balance (pre-tax money)
You're in your peak earning years, which means you're probably in a higher tax bracket than you'll be in retirement
You're vaguely aware that "Roth conversions" are a thing, but you've never pulled the trigger
Here's why the next few years matter.
A Roth conversion means moving money from a traditional IRA (pre-tax) to a Roth IRA (post-tax). You pay taxes now, but everything inside the Roth grows and comes out tax-free in retirement.
Why now?
If you're in your 40s or early 50s, you have 10-20 years of tax-free compounding ahead of you
Nobody knows where tax rates are headed, but they've been historically low and have nowhere to go but up
Converting in a lower-income year (sabbatical, career gap, part-time work) keeps the tax hit manageable
The move: Talk to a CPA or financial advisor about a partial Roth conversion, moving just enough each year to stay within your current tax bracket without jumping to the next one. This is called "bracket filling" and it's one of the smartest tax plays available to Gen X right now.
🛡️ Protection Corner: Your Identity Is Probably Already Out There
Data breaches in 2025 exposed over 1.7 billion records. If you've had the same email address for more than a decade (and most Gen Xers have), your information is almost certainly in at least one breach database.
Here's a quick audit:
Go to haveibeenpwned.com. Enter your email and see exactly which breaches you're in
If you show up in financial, healthcare, or government breaches, act fast
Consider a credit freeze at all three bureaus (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion), it's free and prevents anyone from opening credit in your name
Tools worth knowing:
DeleteMe - removes your personal info from data broker sites (~$130/yr, worth it)
Credit freezes - free at all three bureaus, lift temporarily when you need credit
1Password or Bitwarden - password manager if you're still reusing passwords (please stop)
Identity theft is a financial emergency. Prevention is dramatically cheaper than recovery.
